ARCHITECTURE IN SUSPENSION

A design intervention proposing conceptual idea for the iconic landmark of Rotunda in central Warsaw. Historical, cultural and social values Rotunda – an iconic building of the modernist Warsaw is about to be demolished and replaced with a new development. During demolition, to a surprise of everybody parts of the unique steel structure has been revealed and the demolition works paused. The concept was a spontaneous response to the unusual situation – Suspended works… awaiting decisions. A time for the City to step back and verify ideas. What is the meaning of Rotunda for the City and its citizens in the times of transformation? Is the city ready to demolish the iconic landmark that means a lot to many? One solution could be to retain the unique structure and use it as a frame for a green lush oasis in the city centre, with a unique social hub and a suspended hostel.
