솔재 (Solje Villa)

The architectural project is a single-family house set within a large, tree-rich garden. The primary design concept draws inspiration from the forest, reflecting its forms and the unique spatial qualities it creates. Our goal was to architecturally capture the essence of the spaces formed by trees in a forest—always open in all directions yet distinctly defined.

In a forest, trees form what can be described as “rooms” between their trunks, with spaces that are simultaneously fluid and structured. Above, the canopies vary in height, shape, and density, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. Additionally, the undergrowth and shrubs further articulate the sense of layered, intimate enclosures. This richness of spatial experiences became the foundation of our design.

To enhance this effect and immerse the occupants in these spatial dynamics, the roof of the house is elevated above part of the building. This creates a sense of lightness and allows for natural airflow and the interplay of light at different times of the day. The raised roof contributes to a sensation of openness and connection with the surrounding garden.

A central patio serves as the heart of the house, a communal space linking almost all areas of the home. Simultaneously, each room maintains a unique relationship with different parts of the garden—its own “exclusive” outdoor zone. This design creates a fluid transition between spaces, much like moving through a forest where trees and plants guide the flow of movement and define ever-changing environments.

This project harmonizes architecture with nature, ensuring the house becomes an extension of its forest-like garden, where every space resonates with the serenity and vitality of the woodland experience.
